Gearing up for The Sims 3

There’s continuing press buildup to the February 22nd release of The Sims 3, with 411mania.com in particular providing some Sims styled entertainment by including The Sims 2 in its top 10 of games to play while drunk.
Interestingly however, its one of only a few articles referring to The Sims that I’ve seen recently that doesn’t refer to the relative disappointment of Will Wright’s Spore.
Spore is of course a simulation of a uni-cellular organism developing through generations into a social creature and on to interstellar travel. Darwinism brought to computer games.
Of course it was a much anticipated title, but many reviewers and commentators were left bemoaning various aspects of the game. It was also Will Wright’s first game for several years, with The Sims 2 and its expansions and The Sims 3 all being designed and programmed by specialist teams at EA.
Which makes me wonder if The Sims 3 might be received similarly poorly.
It’s not as if Spore is a bad game - I’ve played thousands of worse ones. Yet the press and reviewers and vocal fans (hiya!) get their opinions heard, and suddenly it is gospel.
With a game like Spore or The Sims, you get out what you put in. I would recommend that anyone wanting to try out The Sims 3 who doesn’t really know what to expectr before buying gets hold of a demo, or finds a friend with a copy to try before buying their own.
As for the rest of us - well, things are going to change in the suburbs of Sim City. There isn’t much time left to Get Used To It.
